Basement Finishing Contractors

Basement Finishing ContractorsHome improvement is such a big topic nowadays. And finishing your basement can be one of the best bang-for-your-buck upgrades you can do. Basement finishing involves turning that big dark junk room into a great useable space! Think of the possibilities, you could finish your basement and get:

  • Games room
  • TV / home theatre room
  • Kids play room
  • Extra bedroom
  • Home office
  • etc.

Personally I have finished two of my homes' basements and worked as a laborer in finishing other people's basements. Even I know when to call in the contractors for certain tasks! I know a lot of people just don't have the time, inclination, or ability to finish their own basement and just want to find a good basement finishing contractor to do it for them. This is especially true when encountering things you may not be qualified or knowledgeable on: plumbing, electrical, basement ceiling options, etc.

Finding A Basement Finishing Contractor

Problem is, how do you find a reputable building contractor for your basement project?

Honestly the absolute best way to find a good contractor is by word of mouth. Ask your friends, neighbors, boss, mail man, etc. Ask around and ask often :-) Also, the staff at home improvement stores may also know of a good contractor.

Sure, some bigger and better-known construction companies can afford a full-page yellow page ad, but does that mean they're the best? Not necessarily. That just means they spend more on marketing/advertising.

If you aren't getting many leads by word-of-mouth, the next best thing is to make phone calls, get quotes from companies, and check them out. Ask the contractor for references (and call them!). Check with the local Better Business Bureau (BBB) for ratings on that basement finishing contractor. Definitely do your homework before you "sign on the dotted line" so you won't get burned!

And remember, as with many things in life, you get what you pay for. Don't necessarily just go for the cheapest quote you get, they might be cheaper because they cut corners, or take longer than expected. Also make sure you're comparing apples to apples when looking at quotes from basement contractors. Be sure the quote is very specific in what is supplied and performed.

Although we are not affiliated with these places, you may want to check out TheContractorSpot or BasementKey if you live in the US or HandyCanadian if you live in Canada and are looking for a basement renovation contractor.

Good luck with your basement finishing project and finding the perfect contractor!
